Water fasting calculator

Enter your last meal and the length of your fast to get the exact end time and date for a 24, 48 or 72 hour water fast. A schedule tool, from a site that will not invent a weight-loss figure to keep you reading.

Fasting duration

Read this before you compare us to the other calculators

If you searched for a water fasting weight loss calculator, you will have noticed that every other result promises a number of pounds. We are not going to give you one, and you should know that before you decide whether this page is useful to you.

The reason is not squeamishness. It is that the number cannot be produced honestly. Weight change across a short fast is dominated by water, glycogen and the contents of your digestive tract, and most of that returns within days of eating again. The proportion that is fat varies widely between people according to body composition, activity and starting metabolic state. A calculator that asks for your weight, your sex and a duration, then returns "you will lose 6.4 lb", is performing arithmetic on assumptions it has no way to check and presenting the result with a confidence nobody has earned.

What we can compute exactly is the schedule: when your fast ends, on what date, and how the hours fall across your week. That is a real question with a precise answer, and it is the one thing on this topic a calculator is genuinely qualified to do.

Water fast end times

Common water fast lengths, all measured from a last meal that ended at 7:00 PM on a Monday. The date change is the part worth checking in advance.

LengthFast endsNightsCommonly called
24 hours7:00 PM Tuesday1One day water fast
36 hours7:00 AM Wednesday236 hour water fast
48 hours7:00 PM Wednesday2Two day water fast
72 hours7:00 PM Thursday3Three day water fast

The calculator above is set to 72 hours by default because that is the length people ask about most. Change it to any duration, and press Start fast to run a live timer that counts across days and survives closing the browser.

What counts as a water fast

A strict water fast means water only, for the whole period. No food, no caloric drinks, and under the strict definition no black coffee or tea either. That last point surprises people who arrive from intermittent fasting, where black coffee is routine.

Plenty of people run a looser version that permits black coffee or plain tea. That is closer to what this site calls an extended fast than a water fast, and neither label is wrong. What matters for your own records is picking one definition and staying with it, because a history built on a shifting rule cannot be compared against itself. Our reference list gives calorie counts for the usual borderline items.

Why longer water fasts are supervised

This is the part most water fasting pages skip or bury, and it is the part that actually matters. Water fasts beyond roughly 24 to 48 hours are commonly undertaken with medical supervision, for concrete reasons rather than as a legal formality.

The most important is refeeding. Reintroducing food after a prolonged fast can trigger rapid shifts in electrolytes such as phosphate and potassium, a recognised clinical condition called refeeding syndrome. It is documented in the medical literature, it can be serious, and it is specifically a risk of the moment the fast ends rather than of the fast itself. That is precisely the moment a calculator hands you back to real life, which is why this page tells you about it rather than stopping at the end time.

Electrolyte balance during the fast is the second reason, and medication is the third. If you take anything that affects blood glucose, or anything that needs to be taken with food, a multi-day water fast interacts with it in ways that need a clinician rather than a schedule. None of that appears in an end time, which is a genuine limit of what this tool can see.

We will compute a schedule for any duration you enter. That is a property of arithmetic and not an endorsement. If you have diabetes, take medication affecting blood glucose, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a current or past eating disorder, are under 18, or have any other medical condition, this is a decision to make with a qualified healthcare professional before you begin.

On dry fasting

Dry fasting means going without water as well as food. We do not provide a calculator for it and we are not going to encourage it. Fasting without fluid carries dehydration risks that fasting without food does not, and the two are routinely discussed together in a way that blurs a meaningful difference. If you found this page searching for a dry fast calculator, the honest answer is that we have deliberately chosen not to build one.

The stages question

"Water fasting stages" is a popular search and the pages answering it are confident about which hour each process begins. Read three of them side by side and you will find the hours do not match, sometimes by a wide margin, while each presents its timeline as established fact.

That disagreement is the most useful thing about those pages. If the thresholds were settled, the numbers would agree. Much of what circulates is extrapolated from animal studies or cell cultures, and the step from there to a claim about your Wednesday afternoon is larger than the confident tone suggests. We report your schedule and leave the metabolic narration to people with evidence for it.

Planning the days around it

A 72 hour water fast covers three nights, two entire days, and every commitment that falls between. The practical failure is rarely the first evening; it is a Wednesday lunch nobody thought about on Monday. Work out the end time above, then look at what sits inside the window: social meals, work events, training, and anything needing sustained concentration.

If you end earlier than planned, stop the timer and your history records the actual duration. A 41 hour fast is recorded as 41 hours, with no broken streak and no failure language. Streaks exist only if you switch on Motivation Mode yourself, and the default is off. Everything is stored in your own browser and nothing is uploaded.

Common questions

How much weight will I lose on a water fast?

We will not give you a number, and we want to be straight about why. Every other calculator ranking for this question produces one, and each is a guess dressed as a measurement. Weight change over a short fast is dominated by water, glycogen and gut contents, most of which returns on refeeding, and the split between that and fat loss varies enormously between people. A precise figure would be invented. What we calculate exactly is your schedule.

When does a 72 hour water fast end?

Three days to the hour from your last meal. Finish eating at 7:00 PM Monday and the fast ends at 7:00 PM Thursday. Enter your own time above and the calculator returns the exact end with the correct date, which is the part people get wrong on multi-day fasts.

What is a water fast?

A fast where you consume only water for the whole period, with no food and no caloric drinks. It differs from intermittent fasting mainly in duration and in strictness: things commonly allowed on a 16:8 schedule, such as black coffee, are usually excluded by a strict water fast definition.

Is water fasting safe?

That depends on you, your health, your medication, and how long you fast, none of which a calculator can see. Water fasts beyond roughly 24 to 48 hours are commonly undertaken with medical supervision, and there are concrete reasons for that including electrolyte balance and refeeding. Discuss it with a qualified healthcare professional before starting rather than after.

What is refeeding syndrome?

A documented and potentially serious set of metabolic shifts that can occur when food is reintroduced after a prolonged fast, involving rapid changes in electrolytes such as phosphate and potassium. It is a recognised clinical condition, not internet folklore, and it is the single strongest reason that longer water fasts warrant medical supervision and a carefully managed return to eating.

How do I break a water fast?

Carefully, and for longer fasts with medical guidance. The scheduling half is arithmetic and this page handles it. What and how much to eat when a multi-day water fast ends is a clinical question given the refeeding risk, and it is not something a calculator should answer in a paragraph.

Can I drink coffee or tea on a water fast?

Not under a strict water fast definition, which is water only. Some people run a looser version that permits black coffee or plain tea, which is closer to an extended fast than a water fast. Neither is wrong, but pick one and be consistent so your own records mean something.

What about electrolytes during a water fast?

Electrolyte balance is one of the specific reasons longer water fasts are medically supervised, and whether to supplement is a clinical judgement rather than a general rule we should hand out. Ask a qualified healthcare professional. A strict water fast by definition includes water only, which is part of why the longer versions need oversight.

Is dry fasting the same thing?

No. Dry fasting means no water either, and we do not provide a calculator for it or encourage it. Going without fluid carries dehydration risks that fasting without food does not, and it is outside what this scheduling tool is willing to support.

Is water fasting good for the kidneys?

That is a clinical question about organ function and we are not equipped to answer it, so we will not. Anyone claiming a definitive answer from a web page is going beyond the evidence. If you have kidney concerns or any kidney condition, that is a conversation with a doctor before you fast, not a search result to read afterwards.

What are the stages of a water fast?

You will find hour-by-hour timelines claiming specific processes switch on at specific hours. Compare a few and you will find they disagree with each other, often by many hours, while each states its numbers as fact. That disagreement tells you the thresholds are not established for an individual. We report the schedule and leave the metabolic storytelling alone.

Is this water fasting calculator free?

Yes. No account, no signup, no subscription. The schedule is computed in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
